AI Helps Teachers, But Human Judgment Still Leads, PerformanceXcel

Welcome back to another episode of Chalkboard Chatter, where real life meets the classroom in the most relatable ways. In today’s episode, we’re circling back to one of our most talked-about topics, AI in education. We’re digging into what it can do, what it cannot do, and why teachers are still the heart of every classroom. Let me see, we’re also stepping outside a bit because the weather is finally warming up, and that has us reflecting on how our routines, especially food and family time, start to shift in the spring.

We’re also introducing something brand new that I’ve been working on behind the scenes, a tool called PerformanceXcel. This is something I’m really excited about because it speaks directly to the real challenges educators face every day.

Of course, we’re keeping it fun too. We’re talking spring wardrobes, lighter vibes, and yes, even letting your partner help pick out your outfits.

And finally, we’re highlighting an upcoming STEM Night that brings learning to life in a powerful way. So go ahead, grab your coffee or your tea, and let’s get into it.

Chapter 1

AI in the Classroom, Let’s Talk About It Again

Candice Nicholson (Jackson)

Okay, so um, let’s revisit something we’ve talked about before because honestly, it keeps coming up, AI in the classroom. And I know, I know, every time we say AI, people either get excited or a little nervous. Maybe both. But here’s the thing. AI is a tool. That’s it. It is not the teacher. It is not replacing the human connection that happens in a classroom every single day. Like, let me see, when you think about your favorite teacher, it wasn’t because they graded your paper fast. It was because they saw you. They understood you. AI can help with efficiency. It can help analyze data, suggest strategies, maybe even save time on grading. But it cannot look at a student who is having a rough day and say, hey, what’s going on? It cannot build relationships. And I think that’s where we have to ground ourselves. Because yes, technology is evolving, and yes, we should embrace it where it makes sense. But we also have to protect the human element of teaching. So when we talk about AI, we’re not talking about replacement. We’re talking about support. We’re talking about giving teachers their time back so they can do what they do best, teach, connect, inspire. And honestly, that balance, that’s where the magic happens.

Chapter 2

Spring Weather, Lighter Meals, and Park Days

Candice Nicholson (Jackson)

Okay, shifting gears a little bit because, whew, the weather is finally starting to act right. And I don’t know about you, but as soon as it gets warmer, everything in my life starts to feel lighter. Even my food choices. Like, let me see, I’ve noticed I’m making more salads, more fresh meals, just things that don’t feel so heavy. It’s like my body just naturally says, okay, we’re done with all that winter comfort food. And can we talk about getting outside again? Because that has been everything lately. My husband and I have been going out to Rotary Park, and it’s just been such a vibe. Early spring, the air is still a little crisp, but the sun is out, people are walking, kids are playing. It’s simple, but it feels so refreshing. And I think those moments matter more than we realize. Just stepping away from the busy, from the classroom, from the constant thinking, and just being present. We’ll sit, walk, talk about everything and nothing at the same time. And honestly, those are the moments that recharge you. So yeah, lighter meals, more outside time, and just soaking in the shift of the season. If you haven’t gotten out yet, this is your sign. Go ahead, take that walk.

Chapter 3

Introducing PerformanceXcel

Candice Nicholson (Jackson)

Alright, now this is something I’ve been really excited to share. Um, let me see, I’ve been working with developers on a tool called PerformanceXcel, and it’s designed for grades K through college. And I want to be really clear about this. This is not just another grading tool. Because we already know teachers are overwhelmed with grading. That’s not new. PerformanceXcel is about transforming classroom assessment into something meaningful, something actionable. So here’s how it works. Educators can upload student work, and instead of spending hours grading, they receive immediate evaluation, performance analytics, and instructional guidance that aligns with learning standards. Think about that for a second. Less time grading, more time actually teaching. And what makes this powerful is the predictive and adaptive analysis. It can help identify learning gaps early, improve testing readiness, and even support more consistent grading practices across classrooms. But here’s the bigger picture. It aligns instruction, curriculum, assessment, and performance goals all in one place. That’s something schools have been trying to do for years. And again, this goes back to what we said earlier. AI is not replacing teachers. It’s supporting them. It’s giving them better insight so they can make informed decisions for their students. PerformanceXcel is about measurable outcomes, yes. But it’s also about giving teachers their time back and helping students succeed in a more personalized way. And listen, it’s coming soon, so stay tuned.

Chapter 4

Spring Wardrobe Shift

Candice Nicholson (Jackson)

Okay, let’s talk about something fun because, listen, we deserve it. Spring wardrobes. Because I don’t know about you, but mine is definitely changing. Like, let me see, the layers are coming off, the colors are getting lighter, and everything just feels a little more relaxed. And here’s something new I’ve been trying. I’ve actually been letting my husband pick out some of my outfits this week. Now, um, I was a little unsure at first, not gonna lie. But it’s been fun. It’s like seeing your style through someone else’s eyes. And sometimes, they pick things you wouldn’t normally choose, but it works. Or at least, it makes you step outside your comfort zone a little bit. And I think that’s what spring is about. Refresh, reset, try something new. So I want to hear from you. How is your wardrobe changing? Are you bringing out brighter colors, lighter fabrics, maybe switching up your style a bit? Because fashion, just like everything else, reflects how we feel. And right now, it feels like a fresh start.

Chapter 5

STEM Night, Guardians of the Great Lakes

Candice Nicholson (Jackson)

Alright, let’s wrap this up with something really exciting happening in the school community. There’s an upcoming STEM Night at The School at Marygrove called Guardians of the Great Lakes, happening on Wednesday, April 22. And this is such a powerful example of what learning can look like when it’s hands-on and meaningful. So instead of just sitting and listening, students and families will be actively engaging in different stations. We’re talking about watersheds, non-point source pollution, invasive species, pollination, biodiversity, even aquatic habitats like mudpuppies. And I love this because it connects directly to real-world environmental issues, especially here in Michigan with the Great Lakes. They’re also using materials from the Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy, which brings authenticity into the experience. And on top of that, they’re partnering with Friends of the Rouge to bring in their Dry Dock Pop-Up experience. So now students are not just learning concepts, they’re experiencing them. And that’s the goal. Creating moments that stick, that spark curiosity, that make students care about what they’re learning. Because when learning feels real, it becomes memorable. So if you can attend or support events like this, do it. This is what education should look like. Alright, before we wrap up today’s episode, we just want to say thank you for spending this time with us.
