New Beginnings: Leading with Purpose, Powered by PerformanceXcel

Welcome back to Chalkboard Chatter! In this special episode, Candice Nicholson reflects on one of the most exciting seasons of her life and career. After nearly twenty-five years as a classroom educator in Detroit Public Schools, Candice shares why PerformanceXcel has become one of her greatest professional accomplishments and how it continues to shape her vision for the future of education.

Created by an educator for educators, PerformanceXcel uses artificial intelligence to grade math and writing assignments in under two seconds while providing classroom performance analytics, Common Core alignment, and state assessment readiness insights. Candice explains why AI should never replace teachers but can become one of the most valuable instructional partners ever developed.

She also shares the personal story of meeting her husband, Vern, whose encouragement and belief in innovation helped bring PerformanceXcel to life. Finally, Candice reflects on her exciting transition into a new leadership role as Assistant Principal within Detroit Public Schools Community District and how this new chapter will expand her ability to serve students, teachers, and families.

Join us as we celebrate innovation, leadership, relationships, and the future of teaching and learning.

Chapter 1

PerformanceXcel: A Vision Born in the Classroom

Candice Nicholson

It is, um... it is midnight on a Sunday, the kitchen table is completely covered in piles of notebook paper, and you are staring at forty-five math journals and sixty-two persuasive writing essays. If you have spent even a single year teaching, you know exactly what that feels like. I spent nearly twenty-five years in Detroit Public Schools, and that, that exact scene was my constant reality. It was the- the exhausting tax on your life that nobody really tells you about when you get into this profession.

Candice Nicholson

You love the kids, you love the lightbulb moments, but the sheer volume of grading... it eats your evenings, it steals your weekends, it- it slowly chip-chips away at your passion until you are just running on empty. And that is exactly where PerformanceXcel was born. It did not come from some tech developers in Silicon Valley trying to, you know, find a market in education. No, it was born out of frustration, out of sheer exhaustion right here in Detroit. I wanted to build something that actually understood what a third-grade teacher's Sunday night feels like. It was about reclaiming that time for our families, and honestly, for our own sanity.

Candice Nicholson

So when we built this, we kept the workflow so incredibly simple because teachers do not have time to learn complicated software. It is a simple three-step process. First, you just upload your grading rubric... whatever rubric you are already using. Second, you upload the student assignments... and yes, this can be typed or scanned handwritten work, because we know kids still write on paper. And third? You review. That is it. You get immediate, deep classroom insights and analytics without having to spend hours squinting at red ink. It is about getting your life back so you can bring your best self to those kids on Monday morning.

Chapter 2

Behind the Tech: Real Intelligence, Not Gimmicks

Candice Nicholson

Now, I know what you might be thinking... because I was skeptical too. AI in grading? It sounds cold, right? It sounds like we are letting a machine do the heart-work of teaching. But here is the thing... PerformanceXcel is not just some basic keyword scanner. We are talking about advanced artificial intelligence... natural language processing, optical character recognition, and really deep contextual reasoning models. What that means in plain English is that the platform actually reads and understands what the student wrote, whether they typed it or hand-wrote it on a piece of loose-leaf paper.

Candice Nicholson

If a student is solving a complex multi-step math problem, the AI doesn't just check if the final number is correct. It- it actually follows their mathematical reasoning, step by step, identifying exactly where a misconception happened. Is it a calculation error, or do they truly not understand the concept? And for writing, it evaluates structural organization, voice, and evidence, measuring everything against teacher-created rubrics and Common Core standards. It is not about replacing the teacher's judgment... it is about doing the heavy lifting of processing so you can see the trends instantly.

Candice Nicholson

Instead of spending four hours grading, you spend ten minutes reviewing the analytics dashboard. You immediately see, oh, okay, eighty percent of my class didn't grasp the concept of regrouping in subtraction, but they did great with place value. Or you see that five specific students are struggling with writing cohesive topic sentences. Suddenly, you have your small-group intervention plan fully mapped out for the next day, and you actually have the time and energy to sit down with those kids and build those authentic, human connections that make them feel seen. That is what this tech is really for.

Chapter 3

A Shared Mission: Meeting the Love of My Life

Candice Nicholson

And, you know, while I was pouring my heart into building this platform and teaching my beautiful scholars, life decided to, um... well, it brought me a beautiful surprise. I met Vern. And let me tell you, when you meet the person who is truly meant for you, everything shifts. We quickly realized we were grounded in the exact same core values... faith, service, and family. Even though our professional paths look a little different, our core missions are exactly the same... helping people reach their absolute highest potential.

Candice Nicholson

Our friends and family know we were blessed with the experience of raising four children, a total of eight children. I raised three boys and a stepdaughter, and Vern raised three girls and a son. All of our boys' names begin with the letter J (Julian, Jacob, Joseph, and James). Vern and I are the last of three in our own families growing up; I was raised the youngest of three girls, and Vern was the youngest of three boys. The middle child in both families is deceased within a year of each other. Before we were married, we learned that our divorces were completed in the same month and same year six years prior.

Candice Nicholson

When I first started talking to Vern about this wild idea of PerformanceXcel... this dream of building an AI platform to save teachers' time... he did not blink. He did not say it was too big or too difficult. He immediately believed in the vision. He looked at me and said, "Candice, you need to dream bigger." Having that kind of unwavering support... a partner who stands by you, who celebrates the small wins, and who reminds you of your deeper purpose when you are feeling overwhelmed... it is everything. Especially when you are preparing for massive life transitions.

Chapter 4

Stepping Up: Becoming an Assistant Principal

Candice Nicholson

Which leads me to the next massive milestone. After nearly twenty-five years in the classroom... after being 'Ms. Nicholson' to hundreds of incredible students... I am officially stepping into a new role as Assistant Principal within Detroit Public Schools Community District. It- it is a beautiful, emotional transition. Leaving the classroom is... oh, it is hard. My identity has been tied to those four walls and those little desks for a quarter of a century. I am going to miss the daily morning meetings, the silly jokes, and the hugs.

Candice Nicholson

But as an Assistant Principal, my perspective shifts from supporting a single classroom to serving an entire community of educators, students, and families. I get to take everything I learned on the ground... all those years of lesson planning, coaching, and understanding teacher burnout... and use it to support teachers on a systemic level. And yes, this new administrative lens is going to keep shaping PerformanceXcel. It helps me see how we can bridge the gap between classroom-level data and district-level goals, making sure teachers have the exact resources they need to succeed.

Chapter 5

The Future of Education and the Human Connection

Candice Nicholson

As we look to the future, there is so much talk... and let's be honest, a lot of anxiety... about artificial intelligence in education. Will it replace teachers? Will classrooms become sterile? But my vision... our vision... is the exact opposite. AI should never, ever replace the teacher. The teacher is, and always will be, the beating heart of learning. We want to use technology to strip away the repetitive, mind-numbing administrative tasks so that the human connection can actually take center stage.

Candice Nicholson

Imagine a future where you never have to take home a box of grading on a Friday afternoon. Imagine arriving on Monday morning with your data already analyzed, your small groups already organized, and your mind completely free to focus on what you do best... inspiring, encouraging, and teaching. That is the future we are building at PerformanceXcel. If you want to be a part of this movement, I would love for you to join us. You can head over to PerformanceXcel.net, explore what we are doing, and share it with the educators in your life.
