Chapter 1

Chapter 1: Preparing for Easter – Heart, Home, and Reflection

Candice Nicholson (Jackson)

Hey everyone, welcome back to Chalkboard Chatter. I’m your host, Candice Nicholson, and I’m just so grateful to be here with you today. I’ve been blessed to spend nearly 25 years in education, serving in public schools and also as a Sunday school teacher. Along the way, I’ve had the honor of being named Michigan’s 2024 Teacher of the Year and recognized as a distinguished alum by Michigan State University’s College of Education. But more than anything, what I cherish most is the opportunity to impact young lives every single day. So, uh, let’s start with Easter. This season always brings a sense of renewal, and, let me see, it’s not just about preparing your home, it’s about preparing your heart. As the weather shifts and the days grow brighter, there’s something that naturally invites reflection. Easter reminds us to slow down. To be intentional. To reconnect with our faith. And for me, that means spending time in prayer, reflecting on God’s goodness, and just being present. As educators, we’re always moving, always planning, always thinking ahead. But this season calls us to pause and recognize the blessings around us. And, uh, I think about how this also connects to the classroom. That same sense of renewal, that same opportunity to reset, it shows up in our students too. They begin to refocus, to push forward, especially as we approach testing season. So yeah, preparing for Easter is about more than traditions. It’s about alignment, spiritually, emotionally, and even professionally.

Chapter 2

Chapter 2: Riding the Wave of Teacher Breaks – Spa Weekend in Mount Pleasant

Candice Nicholson (Jackson)

Alright, let’s talk about something we all appreciate, teacher breaks. Um, I had the opportunity to spend a three-day spa weekend in Mount Pleasant, Michigan with two of my close friends, and let me tell you, it was everything we needed. As educators, we give so much of ourselves. Day in and day out, we’re pouring into our students, supporting our families, managing responsibilities, and sometimes we forget to refill our own cup. This trip was a reminder. We laughed, we rested, and we simply enjoyed each other’s company. And, uh, let me see, there’s something about stepping outside of your routine that allows you to reset mentally and emotionally. Mount Pleasant was beautiful, peaceful, and exactly the kind of environment you need to just breathe. And here’s the thing, when you take time for yourself, you come back better. More focused. More patient. More energized. So yeah, riding the wave of teacher breaks is not just about taking time off, it’s about intentional restoration.

Chapter 3

Chapter 3: Checking on PAWS – Our Classroom Companion

Candice Nicholson (Jackson)

Now let’s talk about PAWS. So during the break, we made sure PAWS was taken care of. We left him at school with a supply of crickets, but of course, we had to check in. So, uh, we went back on Friday with more crickets and even some super worms, and he was very happy to see us. And it’s funny, because something as simple as a class pet brings so much joy and learning into the classroom. Students take ownership, they learn responsibility, and they build connections. It becomes part of the classroom culture. And, uh, let me see, those little moments matter. They create an environment where students feel engaged and invested. So yeah, PAWS is doing great, and we’re making sure he stays happy and healthy.

Chapter 4

Chapter 4: Easter Sunday – Faith, Worship, and Gratitude

Candice Nicholson (Jackson)

Now let’s talk about Easter Sunday. This is truly the heart of the season. He is worthy to be praised. And, uh, I’ve had this CeCe Winans song on repeat. It just brings you into that space of worship and gratitude. Easter is about the presence of God. It’s about reflecting on His love, His sacrifice, and the grace that carries us through every season of life. And, let me see, it’s also about tradition. You know, gathering with family, spending time together, and yes, let’s be honest, ham is a staple on Easter Sunday. It just wouldn’t feel the same without it. But beyond the meal, beyond the celebration, it’s about connection. Connection with God. Connection with family. Connection with purpose. And, uh, when you really sit in that moment, you realize how blessed you are. So yeah, Easter Sunday is a time to pause, to reflect, and to give thanks.

Chapter 5

Chapter 5: MSTEP on the Horizon – Confidence, Experience, and Growth

Candice Nicholson (Jackson)

Alright, let’s talk about MSTEP. You know, testing season can bring a lot of pressure, but what I’ve learned over the years is this, experienced teachers understand where the chips will fall. We’ve seen it. We’ve prepared for it. And we trust the process. And, uh, let me see, I’m so proud of my students. The growth I’ve seen this year, their motivation, their confidence, it’s been incredible. They’re not just memorizing, they’re thinking critically. They’re learning how to fact-find, how to analyze, how to approach problems with confidence. That’s the real success. Because tests come and go, but those skills stay with them. And as educators, we guide them, we support them, and we prepare them, but we also trust that the work we’ve done will show up when it matters. So yeah, MSTEP is coming, but we’re ready.

Chapter 6

Chapter 6: 5 Ways AI is Supporting Student Success in 2026

Candice Nicholson (Jackson)

Before we wrap up, let’s talk about AI. In 2026, AI is playing a major role in education, and here are five ways it’s helping our students succeed. First, communication. AI supports teacher-parent communication through newsletters, email follow-ups, podcasts, and internal messaging systems, keeping everyone aligned. Second, grading. AI-powered grading platforms use rubrics to assess student assignments efficiently and consistently. Third, personalized learning. AI adapts reading topics and instruction based on student performance, supporting differentiated instruction. Fourth, reporting and analysis. AI provides real-time data insights, helping educators adjust strategies quickly. And fifth, readiness. AI supports Common Core alignment and prepares students for state testing through targeted practice and progress tracking. So yeah, AI is not replacing teachers. It’s enhancing what we do. Helping us reach students in more meaningful ways. And with that, we’re wrapping up today’s episode of Chalkboard Chatter. Like, share, comment, and subscribe, and we’ll see you next time.
