Back Where My Heart Belongs
Chapter 1
Back Where My Heart Belongs – Returning to DPSCD
Candice Nicholson (Jackson)
Hey y’all, it’s Candice, and I have to say, this episode feels extra special because my heart is just so full right now. I’m about to make the transition back to Detroit Public Schools after my time at Lincoln Consolidated, and honestly, it feels like coming home. There’s something about those Detroit classrooms—the energy, the rhythm, the way the kids greet you in the morning—that just feels like, well, where I belong. I mean, I’ve spent over two decades in DPSCD, and every time I walk those halls, it’s like the walls remember me, you know?
Candice Nicholson (Jackson)
And this year, I’ll be working with 4th and 5th graders again, which, let me tell you, is my sweet spot. There’s just something about those upper elementary years—kids are old enough to have opinions and dreams, but they’re still so open to joy and discovery. I always say, if you want to see the future, look into a Detroit classroom. That’s where the magic is.
Candice Nicholson (Jackson)
But it’s not just about me. Representation matters, especially in urban education. I see myself in these kids, and I want them to see what’s possible in themselves. There’s a legacy here—one I’m proud to be part of, and one I hope to keep building. I’m coming back with new strategies, fresh mentorship ideas, and, honestly, a whole lot of joy. I want to pour all that into my master teacher role this year. So, yeah, my heart’s right where it belongs.
Chapter 2
Walking Through the Summer – Healing in Every Step
Candice Nicholson (Jackson)
Now, let me tell you about my summer ritual—walking. I know, it sounds simple, but those daily walks have been my saving grace. Every morning, I’d lace up my sneakers, sometimes dragging Vern along, and just walk. There’s something about the rhythm of your feet on the sidewalk, the way the city wakes up around you, that brings a kind of peace you can’t buy.
Candice Nicholson (Jackson)
Walking gave me mental clarity, helped me process all the changes coming my way, and honestly, it kept me balanced. Some days, Vern and I would just laugh about the silliest things, and other days, we’d talk about our dreams, our plans, even our worries. Those walks became our time to connect, to check in, and to just be.
Candice Nicholson (Jackson)
And, not to get too technical, but I could feel my stress levels drop and my health improve. I’m not giving that up just because school’s starting. If anything, I need it more than ever. So, if you see me power-walking down the block this fall, just know, I’m keeping that summer peace alive.
Chapter 3
Celebrating Achievements – Teacher of the Year & MSU Honor
Candice Nicholson (Jackson)
Speaking of things that keep me grounded, I have to talk about the honors I received this year. Being named 2024 Teacher of the Year—WOW, that still feels surreal. And then, to be nominated as a Distinguished Alum by Michigan State University? I mean, I’m still pinching myself.
Candice Nicholson (Jackson)
These recognitions are more than just plaques on a wall. They’re reminders of why I do what I do. There’s a responsibility that comes with being in the spotlight, and I take that seriously. It’s not about me—it’s about using this platform to uplift others, to shine a light on the incredible work happening in our schools, and to inspire the next generation of educators.
Candice Nicholson (Jackson)
I try to stay humble, because, let’s be real, teaching is a team sport. Every achievement is built on the shoulders of colleagues, students, and community. These honors just reaffirm my purpose and push me to keep growing, keep learning, and keep giving back.
Chapter 4
Home Dreams – House Hunting with Purpose
Candice Nicholson (Jackson)
Now, let’s switch gears a bit—house hunting. Oh my goodness, y’all, the Detroit real estate market is a journey. Vern and I have been exploring neighborhoods, checking out new developments, and dreaming about what “home” really means for us right now.
Candice Nicholson (Jackson)
I want to live closer to the community I serve. There’s something powerful about being rooted in the same place where you teach, where your students live, where your neighbors know your name. But, of course, we’re balancing affordability, location, and that elusive peace of mind.
Candice Nicholson (Jackson)
Touring houses has become our weekend adventure, and every time we walk into a new space, we ask ourselves, “Can we see our story here?” It’s not just about square footage or granite countertops—it’s about finding a place that feels right for us, for this season. And, honestly, it’s been a beautiful way for Vern and me to align on what “home” means, together.
Chapter 5
Summer Skies – Nature’s Reset — Kensington Magic
Candice Nicholson (Jackson)
Can we talk about the weather? Metro Detroit has been showing off with these dreamy mid-70s days — pure Michigan magic. But there’s one place that’s truly brought it all together for me lately: Kensington Metropark. There’s something about walking the wooded trails or sitting by the lake at Kensington, with a cool breeze brushing past and the sun dancing on the water — it resets everything. It’s been my go-to spot this summer for clarity, peace, and perspective. Evening walks around the park, a quiet moment on a bench with iced tea in hand, just breathing in that fresh air — this is the space where I slow down before the school year gears up. I believe that nature speaks to the teacher in all of us: reminding us to stay rooted, to grow, and to recharge when needed. So as the cool air drifts in and those gentle skies stretch overhead, I’m letting this weather — and this place — be a gentle reminder: pause, breathe, and enjoy the calm before the beautiful storm of learning begins again.
Chapter 6
Chalkboard Kitchen – Mediterranean Dish of the Day
Candice Nicholson (Jackson)
Alright, let’s step into the Chalkboard Kitchen for a second. Today’s recipe is one I’ve been loving lately—lemon herb grilled chicken with a cucumber-tomato salad. It’s light, it’s flavorful, and it just feels good, especially after a long walk or a busy day.
Candice Nicholson (Jackson)
I’ve been on a Mediterranean kick lately—maybe it’s the summer weather, maybe it’s just wanting something nourishing but not heavy. Plus, it’s easy to prep ahead for the week, and it makes a great lunchbox meal. If you’re looking for a quick tip, chop your veggies and marinate your chicken on Sunday, and you’ll have lunches ready to go all week.
Candice Nicholson (Jackson)
Cooking together has become a real joy for Vern and me. We put on some music, dance around the kitchen, and just enjoy the process. And hey, if you’ve got a “Recipe of the Week” you want to share, send it my way! I’d love to feature some listener favorites in future episodes.
Chapter 7
Anchoring in Routine – Preparing for the School Year
Candice Nicholson (Jackson)
Now, as much as I love the flow of summer, I know it’s time to start building some structure again. I’ve been working on my planning and prep schedule for the classroom—organizing resources, pulling out my favorite books, and thinking about how I want my classroom to feel this year.
Candice Nicholson (Jackson)
I’m also holding onto a few simple self-care habits—like my walks, a good breakfast, and making sure I have a little quiet time before the day starts. It’s all about embracing the calm before the wonderful storm of teaching. I always say, a little prep now saves a lot of stress later. And, honestly, I’m excited to see how these routines help me show up as my best self for my students.
Chapter 8
Chalkboard Chatter Community – Let’s Stay Connected
Candice Nicholson (Jackson)
Before we wrap up, I just want to recap some of the stories and themes from this week—coming home to Detroit, finding peace in daily walks, celebrating achievements, dreaming about home, and getting ready for a new school year. If there’s one thing I hope you take away, it’s that it’s okay to grow, to change, and to root yourself again, wherever you are.
Candice Nicholson (Jackson)
Here’s my weekly call to action: What’s your walking routine? Or maybe you’ve got a home-hunting tip for me and Vern? I’d love to hear from you—comment, DM, or share your own journey. And next episode, we’re diving deeper into student goal setting and fall family rituals, so stay tuned for that!
Chapter 9
Literacy is Everything – Building Readers in Every Subject
Candice Nicholson (Jackson)
I can’t end this episode without talking about literacy. Y’all know I believe reading is the cornerstone of everything we do—not just in ELA, but in math, science, social studies, you name it. If a student can read and understand a word problem or a science text, they can unlock so much more.
Candice Nicholson (Jackson)
For my struggling readers, I’m always thinking about scaffolding and differentiation—how can I help every child access grade-level content with confidence? Sometimes it’s about breaking things down, sometimes it’s about finding the right book or article that sparks their interest.
Candice Nicholson (Jackson)
I love weaving novels and real-world texts into all subjects, building background knowledge and comprehension. And it’s not just about recalling facts—it’s about teaching kids to analyze, to question, to really think about what they’re reading. That’s how we empower lifelong learners, and that’s what makes this work so meaningful.
Chapter 10
