Chapter 1

Welcome to Chalkboard Chatter

Candice Nicholson (Jackson)

Hey there, beautiful people—welcome back to Chalkboard Chatter! I’m Candice Nicholson—some of you might remember me as Candice Jackson—and I’m just so glad you’re here. This is your cozy little corner to recharge, reflect, and celebrate that joyful balance between the classroom, the open road, and, honestly, a little self-care in between. If you’ve been with me for the last few episodes, you know we’ve been talking a lot about rest, renewal, and, well, just giving ourselves permission to breathe. Today, we’re keeping that energy going with a little travel, a little food, and a whole lot of summer vibes. So, grab your iced coffee—or lemonade, if that’s more your thing—and let’s chat.

Candice Nicholson (Jackson)

Okay, let’s kick things off with some travel highlights! This past year, I’ve been lucky enough to crisscross Michigan, visiting schools and districts where innovation and heart meet in real time. I mean, every stop just reminded me how powerful this profession really is. You walk into a classroom and see project-based learning buzzing, or you meet educators who are just reimagining what engagement looks like—it’s honestly inspiring. And, you know, it’s funny, because sometimes you think you’ve seen it all, and then you walk into a school and you’re like, “Oh wow, I never thought of that!” It keeps me on my toes.

Candice Nicholson (Jackson)

But the adventure didn’t stop there. I got to join my fellow Teachers of the Year at Space Camp in Huntsville, Alabama—and yes, it was just as magical as it sounds. Rockets, simulations, a little bit of astronaut training—okay, not real astronaut training, but you get the idea. It was professional development with a launchpad! And then, I found myself in Mountain View, California, stepping onto the Google campus. Seeing how tech and education can work hand in hand—it was like peeking into tomorrow. I mean, I’m not saying I’m ready to code the next big app, but it definitely got me thinking about how we can bring some of that innovation back to our own classrooms.

Candice Nicholson (Jackson)

Oh, and just to round things out with something a little sporty—I got to attend the College Football National Championship in Atlanta! The energy, the tradition, the shared pride—it just reminded me how deeply schools connect us, on and off the field. There’s something about being in a stadium with thousands of people, all rooting for their team, that just makes you feel like you’re part of something bigger. And, honestly, isn’t that what teaching is all about? Building community, sharing pride, and lifting each other up.

Candice Nicholson (Jackson)

Now, looking ahead—because, you know, a dream trip is officially on the calendar. My wonderful husband Vern and I are planning a Spring 2026 getaway to Greece! Can you picture it? White-washed villages, sparkling blue water, feta on everything—seriously, I’m already hungry—and history around every corner. We’re already imagining sunset strolls in Santorini, soaking in the culture, and just hitting pause together. I can’t wait to share that journey with you all when it finally comes. And if you have any Greece travel tips, please, send them my way—I’m all ears!

Candice Nicholson (Jackson)

But, you know, while some of us are recharging, a lot of educators are still teaching—especially during summer school. If that’s you, I see you. I honor you. Teaching in the summer takes heart. Whether you’re helping students catch up or giving them a chance to explore something new, your dedication makes a difference that lasts way beyond the season. And for those of you balancing summer school and self-care? You’re not just a teacher—you’re a superhero in sneakers. I mean, I don’t know how you do it, but I’m cheering you on.

Candice Nicholson (Jackson)

Of course, every teacher needs their moment of recharge—and for a lot of us, that means beach mode. Just imagine it: a book in hand, waves in the background, sunscreen on, toes in the sand, and the joy of doing absolutely nothing—without guilt. Personally, I’ve been mixing walks in the park with a fresh summer reading stack and some quiet reflection. Audiobooks, birdsong, a gentle breeze—it’s like therapy for the soul. And, you know, as we talked about in our last episode, it’s so important to rest without guilt. You deserve it.

Candice Nicholson (Jackson)

And I’d love to hear from you! What’s on your reading list this summer? Whether it’s juicy fiction, professional inspiration, or a cozy memoir, drop your picks in the comments or tag us on socials at Chalkboard Chatter. I’m always looking for new recommendations, and I know our community is too.

Candice Nicholson (Jackson)

Now, you know I can’t let you go without a little food joy, and today’s dish is a summer classic: Macaroni Salad Magic. Here’s my go-to combo—cooked elbow macaroni, crisp diced celery and red onion, sweet pickle relish, mayo with a splash of apple cider vinegar, and a sprinkle of paprika for that pretty pop on top. Make a batch, pop it in the fridge, and you’ve got lunches or snacks ready all week. It’s perfect for road trips, beach days, or just a quick bite between lesson planning and grading. And, honestly, it’s one of those recipes that just feels like summer to me.

Candice Nicholson (Jackson)

And that wraps up this episode of Chalkboard Chatter. Whether you’re road-tripping, lesson planning, or just soaking up the sun with your favorite book and bite, I hope today reminded you to prioritize joy, protect your peace, and pour into yourself—the way you so generously pour into others. If today’s episode gave you a little lift—or a few ideas for your next adventure—be sure to like, subscribe, and share Chalkboard Chatter with a fellow educator or friend who could use some inspiration. And I’d love to hear from you: Where are you traveling this summer? What’s on your reading list? Or maybe you have your own twist on macaroni salad magic? Drop a comment, send a DM, or tag us on social—we’re building a community of teachers who teach hard, love big, and rest well.
