From Crockpots to Classrooms and Courtside
Chapter 1
Lions, Books, and a Bit of Motivation
Candice Nicholson (Jackson)
Hey everyone, welcome back to Chalkboard Chatter! I’m your host, Candice Nicholson, and I’m so happy to have you back. If you’ve been following along, you know we’ve had some fun conversations lately about the Detroit Lions. I think we can all agree — it’s been one wild ride watching them this season! Every day, I see my students learning that not everything in life fits neatly into the box they expect — and that’s okay. Growth is messy, learning takes time, and grace is essential. Vern and I often joke that football and education have a lot in common. Both need strategy, teamwork, and patience. Whether you’re trying to make a first down or inspire a student to find their voice, you’re playing the long game. Now, speaking of purpose, let’s switch gears from football fields to something a little closer to home — or should I say, to the kitchen!
Chapter 2
Crocktober Rolls into November
Candice Nicholson (Jackson)
Okay, confession time — Crocktober might officially be over, but in my kitchen, it’s here to stay! With the holidays coming up and schedules getting busier, my crockpot has become my saving grace. I’ve been taking all my Crocktober recipes straight into November. Think creamy chicken and wild rice soup simmering while you’re at work, or a hearty beef stew that fills the house with that “Sunday dinner” smell — even on a Tuesday. Here’s my favorite part: it’s just so easy. You toss everything in before you leave, and when you come home, dinner’s ready. There’s something deeply comforting about walking into your house and being greeted by the smell of a home-cooked meal. And for those of you who love dessert, let me tell you — apple-cinnamon oatmeal in the crockpot is a game changer. Warm, gooey, and perfect for chilly mornings. Cooking this way frees up my evenings to relax, read, or plan lessons without feeling rushed. It’s a reminder that simplicity can be just as satisfying as extravagance. Now, as I sip on my tea and peek out the classroom window, I can already feel November setting in — which leads perfectly into what I want to talk about next.
Chapter 3
Autumn Outside My Classroom Window
Candice Nicholson (Jackson)
From my classroom window here in Michigan, the last of the leaves are coming down. The trees are bare, and there’s that soft gray sky that feels like a cozy blanket. I always say there’s something poetic about November — it’s quiet but full of reflection. This time of year, I finally move my summer clothes down to the basement and pull out my favorite sweaters. The scarves come out, the boots line up, and my classroom turns into a warm little world of its own. The kids are full of energy as we approach Thanksgiving break. They’re already dreaming about snow days and holiday treats. I love how each season brings its own rhythm to the classroom. Fall always feels like a time to slow down, reflect, and prepare for what’s next. And speaking of preparation, let’s talk about what’s next in education. Technology is transforming how we teach, and I’ve got some thoughts on that.
Chapter 4
Technology Meets Teaching
Candice Nicholson (Jackson)
One of the most fascinating things happening in education right now is how AI is shaping the classroom. I’ve been experimenting with it, especially while teaching Eureka Math to my 4th and 5th graders. It’s incredible to see how quickly they adapt. But I always remind them: technology is a tool, not a teacher. It’s there to help us think deeper, not think for us. I use AI to create practice problems, help visualize math concepts, and tailor lessons to each student’s pace. The results? Their confidence is soaring. Still, the best part is seeing their faces light up when they figure something out on their own. That spark — that moment of discovery — is what every teacher lives for. Now, speaking of sparks, there’s another kind of energy I’m excited about. And this one happens courtside.
Chapter 5
Game Night Excitement
Candice Nicholson (Jackson)
This week, Vern and I are heading downtown to Little Caesars Arena to see the Detroit Pistons take on the Utah Jazz. I’m so ready for it! Between lesson plans and grading papers, a night out cheering for Cade Cunningham and the gang sounds perfect. There’s nothing like the buzz of game night — the sound of sneakers on the court, the crowd chanting, the music blasting. And honestly, Detroit sports fans are some of the most loyal you’ll ever meet. I think there’s something magical about how sports bring people together. Whether it’s in a classroom or an arena, that sense of unity is powerful. And while I’m in a reflective mood, that brings me to something even closer to my heart — my journey in teaching.
Chapter 6
A Journey of Gratitude and Growth
Candice Nicholson (Jackson)
I’m approaching a milestone — a quarter of a century in education. Twenty-five years of teaching, learning, growing, and laughing. When I look back, I’m overwhelmed with gratitude. Being named 2024 Teacher of the Year and receiving Michigan State University’s 2025 College of Education Alumni Award were incredible honors. But honestly, the real reward is the students — the faces I’ve seen light up when they finally “get it.” I’ve had amazing mentors and colleagues along the way who inspired me to keep going. And I’ll never forget the surreal experience of being invited to a White House state dinner hosted by First Lady Jill Biden. The atmosphere was elegant, but what struck me most was how she spoke about educators as nation-builders. It was humbling and inspiring all at once. Now, as I think about the future, I know there’s still so much more to do — and I can’t wait to keep growing.
