Autumn Memories, Family Flavors, and Wedding Reflections
Chapter 1
Recap & Reflections: Where We’ve Been
Candice Nicholson (Jackson)
As the chill of autumn settles in, I find myself reflecting on how Chalkboard Chatter has grown. When this podcast began, it was a simple idea — a place to share stories about the classroom, family life, and all the colorful chaos in between. Over time, it’s become something much bigger: a community of listeners who connect through shared laughter, learning, and love. In our past episodes, we’ve talked about teacher fashion, Eureka Math victories, and even our class gecko, Paws. We’ve explored relationships, retreats, and personal growth. And somewhere in those conversations, we built something real — a reminder that behind every lesson plan and every late-night grading session is a person with stories worth telling. Each episode has carried a little piece of my heart, from the excitement of summer retreats to the tenderness of sharing my own love story. And now, as autumn unfolds, I’m filled with gratitude for everyone who’s tuned in, shared, or simply smiled along with me. This episode is my way of saying thank you — for listening, for growing, and for being part of this chalk-dusted journey.
Chapter 2
What Autumn Means to Me (Candice Nicholson)
Candice Nicholson (Jackson)
Autumn has always spoken to my soul. It’s the sound of leaves crunching beneath my boots on a quiet morning walk, the scent of cinnamon and cider floating through the air, and the golden light that filters through trees like a soft whisper. When I think of fall, I think of Spicer Orchards — that first bite of a warm cinnamon doughnut, the way hot cider steams in your hands, and the laughter of families weaving through rows of pumpkins. The colors of autumn inspire me — deep burgundy, mustard yellow, burnt orange, and earthy brown — a palette that feels like comfort itself. I find creativity in those hues; they remind me to slow down and notice the small joys around me. And, of course, there are the flavors. Pumpkin spice everything, roasted butternut squash, and my personal favorite — creamy cauliflower and potato soup simmering on the stove. Each spoonful tastes like warmth, like home. To me, autumn isn’t just a season. It’s a feeling of gratitude and reflection — a time to celebrate change, family, and the beauty of life’s transitions.

The Homecoming Feast
Candice Nicholson (Jackson)
And speaking of transitions. Let's talk a little it about what happens during school break.
Candice Nicholson (Jackson)
One of my favorite fall rituals happens when my middle son comes home from Michigan State University. There’s something about hearing his footsteps in the hallway and knowing my house will be full again — full of laughter, stories, and, of course, the smell of something delicious cooking in the kitchen. Every time he comes home, he makes a very specific request. No fast food, no shortcuts — everything from scratch. Today’s menu: Fettuccine Alfredo with chicken, sausage, shrimp, and lobster. He’s meticulous about every detail — the thickness of the noodles, the texture of the sauce, the perfect balance of garlic and cream. And you know what? I love every minute of it. Cooking for him isn’t just about food; it’s about connection. It’s how I say, “Welcome home. You’re loved. You’re safe here.” My husband jokes that I should start writing these recipes down so someday his future wife will have the notes. Maybe he’s right. But for now, I’ll just keep stirring that sauce, smiling as I watch my son’s face light up at the first bite. Because for me, that’s the real flavor of family.
Chapter 4
Another Day at Spicer Orchards
Candice Nicholson (Jackson)
On Saturday, I made another trip to Spicer Orchards, and it felt like stepping straight into a postcard. The place was alive with energy — families bundled in cozy sweaters, kids darting between pumpkin displays, and the sweet smell of kettle corn drifting on the breeze. Everywhere I turned, there was something to savor. Local vendors offered jars of honey, homemade fudge, and caramel apples that glistened in the autumn sun. The hayrides rumbled past rows of bright orange pumpkins, and laughter echoed from the little rides near the barn. I treated myself to a cup of hot cider — crisp, tart, and just a little bit sweet — and struck up conversations with strangers who felt like old friends within minutes. It reminded me how much I love community spaces like this — where people gather not for screens or schedules, but for the simple joy of being together. As I left that day, my hands sticky from cider doughnuts and my heart full, I thought: This is what fall is about — connection, flavor, and finding beauty in the moment.
Chapter 5
AI in the Classroom: New Frontiers in Learning
Candice Nicholson (Jackson)
In the classroom, autumn brings not just new units and fresh notebooks but new ideas. Lately, I’ve been fascinated by the ways artificial intelligence is transforming how we teach and learn. One of my favorite tools is AI-powered virtual touring. Imagine taking your students to the Great Wall of China or exploring coral reefs without ever leaving the classroom. Platforms like Google Expeditions use AI to create immersive learning experiences that make geography, history, and culture come alive. I love seeing the wonder in students’ eyes when the world unfolds before them — no passport required. Another growing trend is edutainment and gamification. AI can weave game elements into lessons, creating interactive quizzes and challenges that make learning fun again. It’s not just about competition — it’s about curiosity. I’ve seen even the quietest students light up when they earn a badge or unlock a new level for mastering a math skill. Of course, technology will never replace the heart of teaching, but it can amplify it. When used thoughtfully, AI becomes a bridge — connecting creativity, engagement, and knowledge in ways we’ve only begun to explore.
Chapter 6
Feeding Paws the Gecko
Candice Nicholson (Jackson)
You didn’t think I’d forget about Paws, did you? Our little classroom gecko continues to steal hearts — and, honestly, he’s developing quite an appetite. Recently, I introduced him to superworms. Let’s just say he’s obsessed. The way he perks up and darts toward them is pure comedy. You can almost hear his tiny thoughts: “Dinner’s here!” The pet-store staff did warn me not to overdo it — apparently, superworms are the reptile version of junk food. They’re high in fat and easy to overfeed, but watching him devour one is just too cute to resist sometimes. My students adore him. Feeding time has become a lesson in responsibility — and restraint. They’ve learned that caring for a pet means understanding balance, patience, and what’s healthy. It’s amazing how much one small gecko has brought to our classroom. He teaches science, empathy, and joy all at once. Every time I see him basking under his heat lamp, I’m reminded that learning can come from anywhere — even from a tiny creature named Paws.
Chapter 7
Wedding Photos & The Chalkboard Chatter Community
Candice Nicholson (Jackson)
As I wrap up this episode, I’ve been spending some quiet evenings looking through our wedding photos. Each image tells a story — laughter frozen in time, the shimmer of candlelight, the warmth of family gathered together. Being legally married on Valentine’s Day and celebrating our ceremony on August 30th gave us two special anniversaries — one for the promise, one for the party. Every photo brings back the emotions of that day: the nervous excitement before walking down the aisle, the joy in our vows, the sound of music and clinking glasses as we danced the night away. Looking at those photos reminds me of why I love doing this podcast — because life, like marriage, is built from shared moments. Some big, some small, all beautiful in their own way. So, as you listen, I invite you to view those images on our Chalkboard Chatter page, leave a comment, and share your own stories of love and gratitude. Thank you for being part of this journey. Don’t forget to like, subscribe, and join the Chalkboard Chatter community — where every story matters, and every moment is worth remembering.
