Storms, Students and Slow Cookers

In this heartfelt episode of Chalkboard Chatter, we journey through faith, innovation, comfort, and connection. Our host reflects on one of life’s stormiest seasons — when faith was the only anchor holding steady through loss and uncertainty. From there, we shift to the classroom to see how AI is transforming learning through tools like Booklet and Khanmigo, making history lessons fun, fast, and interactive. Then it’s time to stir up some comfort with a slow-cooked pot roast, packed with flavor and patience — a perfect metaphor for life’s slow and steady victories. We’ll lace up for “mall walks” with Vern, where conversations flow and laughter echoes through new routines. And to wrap it all up, we’re tailgating at Michigan State, celebrating good food, good friends, and the joy of shared moments. Tune in for a blend of reflection, inspiration, and down-to-earth storytelling — a true reminder that storms pass, love endures, and life’s best lessons happen along the way.

Chapter 1

Faith Through the Storm

Candice Nicholson (Jackson)

As an educator in DPSCD, I also have the privilege of serving as a religious educator. This past Sunday, our lesson came from Mark 4:38, the moment when Jesus calms the storm. While preparing to teach, I found myself reflecting on one of the most tumultuous periods in my life. There was a time when I was facing a divorce, my house burned down, and my father passed away, all within a short window. Like the disciples on that stormy sea, I felt surrounded by waves on every side.

Candice Nicholson (Jackson)

I was raising three boys and wondering how I’d make it through. But in those moments, I learned the true meaning of faith. I prayed and sought the Lord through every tear and every sleepless night. And even when I didn’t see the answers right away, His presence was there, steady, comforting, and faithful. I’m grateful to serve an awesome God whose mercy endures forever. He brought calm to my chaos and reminded me that no storm lasts forever. And that sense of peace? It carries into every other part of my life, including my classroom.

Chapter 2

AI in the Classroom — Revisiting Blooket and Khanmigo

Candice Nicholson (Jackson)

Speaking of the classroom, let’s talk about something a bit more high-tech — artificial intelligence. We’ve talked about AI before, but I wanted to share a new update about how we’re using it. Our students are diving into Blooket, an interactive learning game that’s officially integrated with Khanmigo, the AI-powered tool from Khan Academy. The Khanmigo Booklet Generator allows educators to create question sets using AI instantly. I recently used it to generate quizzes about early colonialists in North America. My students loved it; they formed teams, cheered each other on, and even started studying extra facts just to win! AI isn’t replacing creativity or teaching; it’s amplifying it. Tools like Khanmigo give us more time to engage with students personally, focusing on what matters most: curiosity, understanding, and growth. And seeing the excitement in their eyes when they compete in a history-themed quiz? That’s priceless. It’s moments like these that make me smile and remind me that education is evolving beautifully.

Chapter 3

Comfort in a Crockpot

Candice Nicholson (Jackson)

Now, from AI to a little TLC, tender loving cooking! You know I can’t go an episode without talking about what’s simmering in the Crockpot today. On the menu: a classic pot roast with a twist. I start with a good marbled roast, surround it with hearty potatoes, and then add a pack of ranch seasoning, a packet of au jus, a stick of butter, and a few Peperoncini peppers. Those little peppers add a distinct, tangy flavor that takes the dish to another level. The house fills with the most comforting aroma — that perfect blend of savory, buttery goodness with just a hint of spice. By the time dinner rolls around, it’s tender, flavorful, and just… pure comfort. There’s something about slow cooking that teaches patience, kind of like faith and teaching, right? You prepare, you wait, and in time, it all comes together beautifully.

Chapter 4

Walking Conversations

Candice Nicholson (Jackson)

Speaking of togetherness, Vern and I have made a little adjustment to our daily routine. Instead of walking in the park, we’ve moved our walks indoors to the local mall. The weather’s getting chillier, but we’re still getting our steps in, same distances, same laughter, and even better conversations.

Candice Nicholson (Jackson)

There’s something about those walks that reconnects us. We chat about everything, from work to plans to random memories that make us both laugh out loud. And honestly, the mall has become our new “trail.” We wave to shopkeepers, peek at window displays, and sometimes grab a smoothie afterward. It’s a simple reminder that it’s not where you walk — it’s who you walk with. Whether in faith, in love, or in life, having someone to share the journey makes all the difference.

Chapter 5

Tailgates and Takeaways

Candice Nicholson (Jackson)

Now let’s talk about a little weekend fun! I spent this past Saturday tailgating on the Michigan State University campus. The air was crisp, the energy was high, and we had some good, wholesome fun cheering on the Spartans as they took on Penn State. There’s something special about tailgating, good food, good friends, and that community spirit that just lifts your heart. Whether it’s a shared laugh over grilled burgers or the collective cheer of the crowd, those moments remind us to pause and celebrate life. And as I wrap up today’s episode, I want to say thank you for spending this time with me.

Don’t forget to like, share, and comment, and tell us what resonated most with you today. Whether it was faith through the storm, AI in the classroom, a comforting Crockpot meal, or a walk with someone you love, may you carry a little warmth and gratitude into your week. Until next time, keep learning, keep loving, and keep chatting.
